CONTEXT
AG Insurance is expanding its database services as part of a transformation project focused on adopting and industrialising NoSQL technologies.
Following the initial implementation of services around Azure SQL Database, the team plans to develop equivalent services around Azure Cosmos DB. AG Insurance is looking for a Senior Cloud Database Engineer to drive this transition, take ownership of the NoSQL domain and establish the technical standards, automated processes and operational procedures required to support these services.
RESPONSIBILITIES
NoSQL Service Design & Implementation
• Design and implement data refresh and copy mechanisms between production and non-production environments.
• Implement data scrambling techniques for NoSQL databases.
• Contribute to the deployment and industrialisation of Azure Cosmos DB services.
Performance & Operations
• Implement appropriate monitoring and alerting for Azure Cosmos DB.
• Investigate performance issues and identify optimization opportunities.
• Define operational procedures enabling junior and intermediate engineers to handle routine performance-related tasks independently.
Data Governance & Modelling
• Define NoSQL data modelling standards and governance practices.
• Establish data modelling processes in collaboration with the Data team, including the use of ERwin.
• Ensure clear documentation of the data available in Cosmos DB.
Automation & Technical Leadership
• Automate database processes using scripting, Infrastructure as Code and deployment pipelines.
• Take ownership of the NoSQL domain and drive the adoption of new technologies.
• Document technical solutions, operational procedures and best practices.
• Coach junior and intermediate engineers and collaborate with Security and other IS teams on topics such as backups, security and cloud costs.
TOOLS
Core technologies: Microsoft Azure, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure SQL Database, SQL Server.
Automation: PowerShell, Python, Terraform / Infrastructure as Code.
Data modelling: ERwin.
Nice to have: Azure DevOps or equivalent tooling, CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.
SKILLS
• Strong knowledge of SQL Server and database administration concepts.
• Hands-on experience with Azure cloud database services and NoSQL, ideally Azure Cosmos DB.
• Experience designing and implementing database services, including automation and performance monitoring.
• Knowledge of data modelling, data governance, troubleshooting and optimisation.
• Understanding of backup strategies, security requirements and cloud cost management.
• Strong scripting skills in PowerShell and/or Python; Terraform knowledge is an advantage.
• Ability to take ownership of technical initiatives, drive technology adoption and establish standards.
• Strong documentation, communication and knowledge-transfer skills.
